The Right to Disconnect (From Reason)

This week's Amplify Talent Briefing explores CA's "right to disconnect" bill, what employee's think about HR's impact on culture, how LinkedIn become the talk of the content creator community, the right way to let employees go, a new tool to benchmark your salary with colleagues, harnessing HR's power in venture, ChatGPT prompts for training, and more.

Hi friends! I’m back from Spring Break and diving into Q2.

❶ One Big Thing

A California lawmaker has introduced a “right to disconnect” law mirroring recent similar laws passed in Europe limiting an employer’s ability to send emails outside of work hours.

While I’m all for employee rights and balance, this seems misguided for today’s world of work. We’re no longer living in industrial-era work constructs - particularly for the tech sector this law purports to protect.

Work today spans time zones and countries.

Work today synchronous and asynchronous.

Work today is about flexibility, not rigid mandates.

Work today is about empowering employees to have agency over how and when they work - including off hours if it suits them for whatever reason they choose.

If you’re a leader and want to promote balance in a way that actually helps all employees, consider a variation of the message below in your sig file…

My working hours may not be your working hours. No replies are expected until you’re working again.
